Using the Note/Value Picker

The value picker behaves differently depending on the type of MIDI Status Message that is being edited.

For anything but NOTE ON/OFF messages it is simply a dropdown control, containing a list of all 128 possible values.  For CC messages, any common values defined by the General MIDI specification are also listed.

For NOTE ON/OFF messages, the control brings up a special editing panel as shown:

Here all available note values are listed.  The names for these values come from the mapping that you have assigned to the channel of the trigger you are editing, thus it is important that you have set up your mappings accordingly before editing triggers.

At the top of the editing pane are various tool buttons that enhance the panel.  One of the most important is the sort/group button.  When engaged, the note values that are defined by the mapping are bubbled to the top and sort alphabetically.  This aids in finding values as most modules and VSTs have their note values spread out throughout the spectrum of available notes.  If sort/group is disengaged, then the values simply appear in numerical order.

Groups and Pinning

Along the left edge of the window are group tabs which act as filters.  These are defined by the mapping file but will typically have groups such as 'Kicks', 'Snares' and 'Cymbals'.  Select one of these groups to see just the items contained within.  Use the 'ALL' group to browse all available note numbers.

On each grouping tab there is also a "pin" icon.  If no groups are pinned (the default) then ZenEdit will pre-select a group based on the last note number used.  Click on a pin icon to pin that tab.  When a group is pinned, it will be the selected one whenever the window opens.

Melodic  Usage

If you are editing a trigger that currently is in melodic mode, then by default the pane will not show the list of mapping values and will instead show an interactive piano roll.   Here you can select a note value by simply clicking a piano key.  Right-clicking on a key will allow you to preview the key before selecting it.

To also view a list of note names, engage the "More" button.  You can likewise use this button to show the piano roll when editing a non-melodic note.

Crossfades

Beside the notepicker is a button labeled "x4":

When engaged, 3 more notepickers will appear each of which represents one note in your Zendrum's 4-note crossfade feature.  You may now pick a separate note value for each of the 4 crossfade zones.  Notice that these values do not need to be sequential and it is possible to use the same note value for more than one zone.  A red dot appears on triggers that have crossfade enabled.  Remember also that ZenEdit allows you to fine-tune the crossfade points.

To turn off crossfade, simply press "x4" again.
